Response to sextortion of Edinburgh eight year old
Responding to the sextortion of an eight year old girl in Edinburgh, Mary Glasgow, Chief Executive of Children First said:
“This is every family’s worst nightmare and will shock parents across Scotland to their core. But, the terrible reality is that the online threats to our children grow daily. It is vital that the little girl who is the victim of this horrific and traumatic crime gets all the support she needs to recover.
“Technology platforms must put children before profit and make young people’s safety their top priority.
“As a parent or carer, talking openly to your children about the risks of being online, letting them know if something happens they aren’t to blame and that you will always be there for them are the most important things you can do to keep them safe.
“If you have immediate concerns that a child is at risk, the police should always be your first port of call.
“Anyone in Scotland who is worried about the impact of online harm on a child or young people can contact our Children First support line for help. Call our friendly team confidentially on 08000 28 22 33 or start a webchat at www.childrenfirst.org.uk ”
The support line is open 9am – 9pm, Monday to Friday or 9am – 12 noon Saturday and Sunday.
