Children First responds to Lancet research and reports of Scottish police targeting online gangs
Children First, Scotland's national children's charity, has responded to a Lancet article calling for a public health approach to the manosphere and to news that Police Scotland have joined international law enforcement in targeting online gangs which groom and coerce children into acts of self harm.
Mary Glasgow, Chief Executive of Children First, said:
“Today's Lancet research makes clear that the Scottish Government must put the delivery of its commitment to tackle online harm through a public health approach top of its agenda. Children and young people tell Children First that manosphere content is changing attitudes and behaviours in their homes, schools and communities. The spotlight that Police Scotland is shining on the harm caused by Com groups is just one of many examples of how the manosphere is reinforcing harmful views, damaging relationships and causing real and significant physical and emotional harm.
“The First Minister has rightly championed the prevention of violence against women and girls, a public health approach to tackle online harms and the need for stronger cross-government action. Now is the time to turn that ambition into reality through an urgent, concerted and unrelenting public health response that includes education, health, public prevention, regulation, business and technology.
