Children 1st comment on estimate that 300 million children across the world face online sexual exploitation
Commenting on new research which estimates that over 300 million children across the world face online sexual exploitation Mary Glasgow, chief executive of Children 1st, said: “This new research from ChildLight shows the deeply concerning depth and breadth of online child sexual exploitation of children across the world, including in Scotland.
“Across our services at Children 1st, we see how children are being impacted by advances in digital technology in a way that no previous generation has experienced. These advances have the potential to both greatly benefit and deeply harm young people. Horrifically, children and young people are being sent unsolicited pictures, unwanted sexual talk, questions and requests for sexual acts by adults or other young people.
“Technology firms fuelling these new advances must take responsibility in ensuring their platforms are safe for children and young people. Children’s safety must come first before profit and privacy for offenders.
“Parents who are concerned about their children’s online activity, you can contact Children 1st Parentline for advice and support by calling 08000 28 22 33 or by visiting: www.children1st.org.uk/parentline."
