Training

Children First and sportscotland have developed a number of child wellbeing and protection training courses to provide learners with the knowledge and skills required for their role in sport. Further awareness and training resources are planned and will be rolled out in due course.

This workshop is suitable for all adults in regulated work, delivering or leading sporting activities for children and young people. The training will provide you with the appropriate knowledge of child wellbeing and protection to identify and respond to concerns that may arise in your role working with children and young people.

Find out more on the sportscotland website.

The workshop is suitable for individuals responsible for leading their club or organisation in the wellbeing and protection of children and young people. Learners will have the opportunity to develop advanced knowledge and skills in child wellbeing and protection and in managing concerns in their club or organisation.

Suitable for Child Wellbeing and Protection Officers, or those in a similar role, who are 18 years old and over.

Prerequisites: Learners must have completed both modules of the Child Wellbeing and Protection in Sport Workshop (CWPS).

Workshop Content

A three hour face to face or virtual classroom workshop by an approved tutor. By the end of the workshop participants will be able to:

  • Identify a framework for good safeguarding governance in a sports club/organisation
  • Identify the different safeguarding roles and responsibilities in a sports club/organisation
  • Confidently assess the suitability of adults to work with children and young people
  • Respond effectively and with confidence to wellbeing and protection concerns that may arise in or out of the sporting environment
  • Recognise ways in which club culture influences the wellbeing and protection of children and young people, and identify methods for effecting culture change in this important area.

The ‘Undertaking Investigations’ training is a full day training which supports those working in sport to gain a better understanding of the investigation process. Using a case study the training explores the investigation process from start to finish, along with providing guidance and processes that can support SGBs to effectively manage investigations and support those involved. This training provides an opportunity to share learnings across SGBs and establish best practice when undertaking an investigation.

This training is initially aimed at anyone within Scottish Governing bodies of sport, sports clubs and other sporting organisations that will be involved in managing wellbeing and protection concerns. When a wellbeing and protection concern arises, it is necessary for more than one individual from an organisation to be involved. We would therefore recommend that more than one individual from your organisation attends the training.

Although not compulsory to attend, we also have a follow up training ‘Managing Disciplinary and Appeals Processes’ which we would recommend you attend for a holistic understanding of the investigation and disciplinary processes.

For further information on how to attend this training, please contact the CMSS team at cmss@childrenfirst.org.uk

The ‘Managing Disciplinary and Appeals Processes’ training is a 3-hour training course which supports those working in sport to develop an understanding of the purpose of a disciplinary hearing, how to conduct hearings, how to decide disciplinary action and the appeals process. This training has been developed in line with ACAS requirements and the CMSS guidance document. Through exploring a case study, sharing learning across SGBs and from lived experience this training will provide an understanding of disciplinary and appeals processes, along with key documents and steps to support those involved.

This training is initially aimed at anyone within Scottish Governing bodies of sport, sports clubs and other sporting organisations that will be involved in managing disciplinary and appeals processes for volunteers or employees. While it is not essential to attend the ‘Undertaking Investigations’ training in advance, knowledge and understanding of the investigation process is strongly recommended.

When a wellbeing and protection complaint or concern arises, it is necessary for more than one individual from an organisation to be involved. We would therefore recommend that more than one individual from your organisation attends the training. For example, this could include the Wellbeing and Protection Officer, an HR member who would be involved in the disciplinary process, and the CEO. We recognise that the roles and responsibilities vary across SGBs and recommend that everyone involved in this process has appropriate training.

For further information on how to attend this training, please contact the CMSS team at cmss@childrenfirst.org.uk

The Adult Wellbeing and Protection in Sport (AWPS) training is suitable for coaches, leaders, volunteers, officials and also individuals responsible for leading their club or organisation in the wellbeing and protection of adults. Learners will have the opportunity to develop knowledge of the roles and responsibilities associated with adult wellbeing and protection.

This session includes how to identify concerns, respond to concerns and disclosures and how to create a safe culture within a sports club setting in Scotland.

Suitable for: 16 years + who are involved in delivering or coordinating sporting activities including sports club Wellbeing and Protection Officers (or equivalent) and other committee members in Scotland.
